I got this from the late great King Features editor Jay Kennedy in like 2003. It’s the most handwriting I’d ever gotten on a response. Despite the fact that it was an explanation of my being rejected, and the fact that he couldn’t be bothered to spell Ozy’s name correctly (really, few ever have), it helped keep me going.
Wow! That’s a great rejection. All I usually get is the standard form letter or “what you wrote is not marketable” spiel. I used to be devastated, but now I see them as fuel. I recently realized that I need to write what I want, for myself. Trends always change. Fashions change. Eventually, someone will want what you have… especially if it truly is of yourself.
I got one from Jay too…important to get those to keep you going. It might be a rejection but at least you know you’re on the right path.
If it’s any consolation, I’ve always spelled Ozy’s name right, no matter how hard my spellchecker complains.
In fact, I find it slightly more annoying when fan artists get the color of Millie’s feet wrong.
